An ambush in Person

tide 0,93

Two Mulgore ark ships had jumped into the empty Person system many tides earlier. Astrogation had shown Person IV to be a fine colony world, and the ark ships were to seed it and leave. Both ships were of the Covenant class, 4 drone racks and plenty of habitat, scoop and hold. Ideal ark ships, with a simple task before them.

The mission proceeded sedately until the first colonists were landed, and then a Sathar vessel was seen vectoring towards the new colony - revealed by the firing of a lockdown drone. Nothing could be more ominous. No doubt they were coming to engage the ark vessels, possibly in revenge for the fate of their own fleet in Gonkrag. The problem was that each colony drone fired caused the Covenant to appear on scan.

The Covenant II spindizzied west, out of the gravwell and manufactored more drone racks, while the Covenant III stayed in orbit, seeding more colonists.

Luckily the Covenant II stopped right outside the gravwell before commencing manufacture. Next tide showed part of a mine field only 2 hexes further west, the Sathor had been preparing a trap. The Sathor III started a slow move west, firing a last colony drone at the planet as it went.

The next tide a large beholder west off, illuminating the entire Person IV region. Two Sathor attack craft were moving through the Person IV gravwell, illuminated by firing attack drones as they went. One other lay to the west, this being the ship that had layed the mines and deployed the beholder.

The Mulgore were in for a tough fight, and would probably be forced to concede the system. Not only that but the Sathor had locked the system, there would be no reinforcements. Both Covenant vessels fired attack drones at the incoming Sathor, and used their spindizzies to move to the other side of the thin minefield - it would be used as screen against the Sathor attack drones from the gravwell, and after that they could see what happened.

Using their own mines against them

The Mulgore covenants escaped the initial trap by luck, and the first salvoes by draining their Spindizzies, but the outlook was by no means certain, and the colony would not be safe for some time.

Drones were fired, crew men died, consumed by nano. The Covenant III was severly damaged and was forced to jump out. Two of the Sathor were also damanged, but still had active racks. It was a dangerous decision, but the remaining Mulgore Covenant chose to attack!

Damaged

Several turns later and the Sathar were regrouped to the south, and the sole Covenant stayed a distance away, sniping at them with attack drones, and wondering if there was any way to kill at least one of the Sathar, and so cover it's loss of DL when it was forced to jump.

Then fortune smiled, a ripple in the space caused mines to rapidly reproduce near the Sathar ships and they all jumped out, leaving the Covenant alone in the system.... (this was a bug in the Beta 2 phase)
